2014 Illinois High School 3A Boys Soccer State Champions

2004 & 2015 Illinois High School Soccer Coach of the Year

With over 20 years of soccer camp experience to match his 24 years and 339 wins as a varsity high school head coach, 5 Star Soccer Camp Director Michael Wiggins continues to lead soccer programming throughout the Chicagoland area with as much energy and excitement as he did back in 1994. In his second career position as a high school head coach, Wiggins has continued to see success with the Hinsdale Central boys soccer program. The 2013 season was no exception finishing with an undefeated regular season and a national ranking through the NSCAA that got as high as #5 and a second consecutive undefeated West Suburban Conference Championship. In 2014, it was a 19-4-4 record, a third consecutive undefeated conference season and the first state championship for Coach Wiggins that also brought the second state title in the history of a historic Hinsdale soccer program. The state title victory came against an undefeated Normal Community HS team in the title game, a team that was also in the National Top 10. Most recently, the 2015 season set many records in the Hinsdale program, with a remarkable 18-2-1 record, NSCAA/USA Today national ranking that got as high as #9, and Coach Wiggins was named the 2015 Illinois High School Coach of the Year.

A native of Chicago’s western suburbs, Wiggins brings enthusiasm, a hard-work ethic and passion to his position as a teacher, coach and camp director. Those characteristics over the years have helped him claim the Illinois High School Soccer Coach of the Year twice ('04 & '15 - only the 5th person in the history of the IHSSCA to do so multiple times) and the 2012 Illinois High School Soccer Coaches “Soccer Person of the Year” Award. Those honors have substantial backing. In his 16 years at Central, Wiggins has become the winningest coach in the program's history as the Red Devils have recorded a 230-90-34 (.706) overall record in that time, including 8 of the best 10 seasons in the program’s history and three 20+ win seasons. In the fall of 2015, Coach Wiggins was named to the West Squad Coaching Staff of the High School All American Game held in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Wiggins’ arrival in Hinsdale was actually a return, having spent two years at Central as an assistant in 1992 & 1993. While working at Hinsdale Middle School as a physical education teacher, “Wiggy” was named the Head Soccer Coach at Downers Grove South in 1994, and served in the top spot there until 2001. A former player, the 48-year-old Wiggins competed at Illinois State University before the Normal, Ill., school dropped the men’s soccer program. In addition to his NCAA Division I playing experience, there was a brief stint with Chicago Power S.C. in the summer of ’93, Chicago’s only professional soccer at the time. Wiggins has been a member of the Illinois Olympic Development Program coaching staff on several levels as an assistant, while also serving two years as an ODP State Team head coach. His experiences have included scouting for U.S. Soccer, as well as working as an independent observer for Major League Soccer (MLS). An experienced club coach, Coach has been involved with various clubs over the years, most notably as a coach in the Chicago Magic Soccer Club where he was inducted into the Chicago Magic Hall of Fame in March of 2005. He has served on the Coaching Education Program State Staff for the Illinois Youth Soccer Association (IYSA), where he has worked for close to 20 years. Wiggins also provides coaching education for the AYSO Region 210 as the Regional Coach Trainer and works as a Soccer Coordinator for Coaching Education and Youth Instruction at the Naperville Park District. He also holds a USSF National “B” license and the USSF National Youth License. Born April 18, 1969 in Chicago, Illinois, Wiggins is married to Bonnie (formerly Higgins), who was a standout gymnast at Rolling Meadows H.S. in the late 1980’s, having won the 1988 IHSA State Title on the vault. The couple has three children: Julianne (23), Emma (20) and Brad (16).
